The Dr. and Mrs. J.B. Gentry Legacy Scholarship honors the lifelong love, dedication, and pursuit of excellence shared by Bill and Bernice Gentry, who first met as students at Mitchell Community College. Despite their differing personalities—Bill, thoughtful and reserved, and Bernice, outgoing and charismatic—their time together at Mitchell forged a bond that would last a lifetime. Their shared commitment to education, service, and one another became the foundation of a remarkable journey marked by academic achievement, professional success, and unwavering support for their alma mater.
Both Bill and Bernice exemplified the power of education to transform lives. Bernice, a top graduate of both Mitchell and Appalachian State University, devoted herself to teaching, while Bill, a Davidson College and UNC School of Medicine graduate, distinguished himself in the medical field. Through triumphs and hardships, their steadfast partnership demonstrated the importance of perseverance, intellectual curiosity, and mutual encouragement. Their enduring connection to Mitchell was reflected in Bill’s service as Alumni Association President and in their ongoing efforts to support students who, like them, sought to build a brighter future through education.
