In the quiet town of Warrenton, Virginia, just a short drive from Washington, D.C., Madison grew up surrounded by the gentle rhythm of rural life. When she left Statesville two and a half years ago, she took with her the love of her small hometown, as she decided to settle into the Statesville area and enroll at Mitchell Community College.
Madison’s educational journey was anything but traditional. She had attended various schools, balancing homeschool, private institutions, and public schools. It was this background that shaped her flexible approach to learning and exploration of different educational institutions. Her time at Mitchell Community College, from Spring 2022 to Spring 2024, was a continuation of this diverse educational path.
Choosing Mitchell was a strategic decision. In Virginia, community college wasn’t free, but dual enrollment was. Madison seized the opportunity to advance her education cost-effectively while positioning herself for future success. Her major was in the Arts and Music, aiming to lay a strong foundation for her creative pursuits, even though she did not ultimately graduate with a degree.
One of her fondest memories at Mitchell was a drawing project that required creating art from unexpected materials. This project, which involved making something out of the norm, perfectly captured her approach to creativity. It was in these unconventional assignments that Madison found joy and inspiration.
Her time at Mitchell was not without support. Dr. Kaleta, along with advisors Hannah Scott and Sharon Ellis, provided guidance that was both encouraging and practical. Lynn Wilemon’s music classes were also particularly memorable, providing Madison with valuable skills and knowledge.
Beyond academics, Madison actively engaged with the college community. She was a graduate marshal for Spring 2024 and took part in several honor societies, including Phi Theta Kappa, NSLS (National Society of Leadership and Success), and NSCS (National Society of College Scholars). These roles and organizations helped her build a network and gain leadership experience.
After leaving Mitchell, Madison continued her academic journey by entering Liberty University, pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Cinematography and minoring in Studio Art. Her studies and passion for storytelling guided her towards a career in screenwriting, with aspirations to work as an Assistant Director and secure an internship in a studio, ideally, in Georgia or North Carolina.
Looking ahead, Madison envisions herself ten years down the road as a director working in a studio, with several published books and art pieces to her name. Her dream is to blend her love for film and visual arts into a fulfilling career.
When asked about advice for future Mitchell Community College students, Madison encouraged them to maintain low expectations but high standards. She emphasized the importance of focusing on quality over quantity in their coursework and getting involved in the college community to fully experience and benefit from their time at Mitchell.
Reflecting on her journey, Madison recognized loneliness as one of her biggest challenges. Though she struggled to form study groups and friendships, she channeled her efforts into her studies, which helped her achieve a high GPA and ultimately meet her goals.
Madison’s story is a testament to the power of adaptability and perseverance. From the quiet streets of Warrenton to the bustling life of a future director, her journey underscores the value of following one’s passion while embracing the opportunities that come along the way.
