Da’Monte grew up in Statesville, North Carolina, and started his educational journey right in his hometown. He earned his high school diploma through Mitchell Community College and decided to stay on as a student. With strong connections already in place, Mitchell felt like the natural next step. But even with a strong foundation and a clear path ahead, Da’Monte discovered that the greatest triumph would be learning to rise above his own doubts and stay focused on the future he envisioned.
He enrolled in November 2022 and graduated in May 2025, majoring in Electrical Engineering and Welding, two fields he was already familiar with through family ties. His uncle worked in the electrical trade, and Da’Monte saw an opportunity to learn more, get hands-on experience, and build a solid foundation for the future.
What stood out most to Da’Monte during his time at Mitchell wasn’t just the classes, it was the support. He made great use of the library and the writing center, but it was the personal support from faculty and staff that made the biggest difference. Dr. McEachern offered guidance not only for academics but also for real-life responsibilities like finances and adulthood. Patrick Cline helped him get the tools and resources he needed for his classes, and Lee Troutman gave him valuable lab experience in Workforce Technology.
Outside of the classroom, Da’Monte got involved in activities like the NASA Launch project and was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, an honor society that recognized his academic efforts.
This fall, Da’Monte will transfer to the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to continue studying Electrical Engineering and Welding. His long-term goal is clear: start his own electrical and welding business with multiple locations, including in Charlotte and across state lines in South Carolina, where he plans to partner with his brother. His family is spread out across Louisiana, New York, Georgia, and North Carolina, and their support has been a steady influence on his plans.
Looking ahead, Da’Monte sees himself running a business focused on electrical work, with other skills in automotive and car electronics adding to his range. “I want to be able to do a little of everything,” he says, emphasizing practical skills and flexibility.
The biggest challenge he’s faced so far? Himself. Staying focused and avoiding distractions has taken work. “Don’t let yourself get in the way of your goals,” he advises.
His message to future Mitchell students is simple: “Don’t stop. Set a goal, reach it, and then set a higher one. Your past doesn’t define your future.” Da’Monte’s story isn’t about big moments or dramatic turns, it’s about steady progress, staying focused, and putting in the work. With determination and support, he’s building a path forward, one step at a time.
