Carol Johnson Receives 2022 Distinguished Alumni Award

In 2022, Mitchell Community College proudly honored Carol Johnson, Class of 1972, with the Distinguished Alumna Award. This recognition reflects both her deep roots at the institution and her lifelong commitment to expanding access to education. Carol has devoted nearly five decades of her career to Mitchell, where she currently serves as Vice President for Workforce Development and Continuing Education. Her journey began as a student at Mitchell, where she laid the foundation for a future dedicated to serving others through education.

After earning her degree from Mitchell, Carol continued her academic journey at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and joined Mitchell’s staff in 1974. Over the years, she rose through the ranks, holding roles such as coordinator of the learning lab, director of basic skills, occupational extension coordinator, and dean of continuing education. As her career grew, so did her education. Carol earned both a Master’s and an Education Specialist degree in Adult Education from Appalachian State University. Her leadership has shaped programs that include English as a Second Language, GED and Adult High School completion, occupational skills training, small business services, and customized workforce training. Her impact extended beyond Mitchell as she contributed to statewide policies and initiatives through her service with the North Carolina Community College System and the NC Community College Adult Educators’ Association.

Carol’s dedication is not limited to the College. She has long been a passionate advocate for Mitchell in the broader community. Through her volunteerism and outreach, she has helped grow support for the College and its Foundation. One of her proudest accomplishments is her longtime involvement with the Carolina Hot Air Balloon Festival, where she has served as volunteer coordinator for nearly fifty years. Proceeds from the festival support the Beverly Hedrick Scholarship, established by Carol and her colleagues in honor of her late friend and co-worker who was devoted to education and Mitchell’s mission.

Carol Johnson is the embodiment of Mitchell’s spirit. She is a proud alumna, a respected leader, and a steadfast supporter of students, staff, and the community. Her legacy reflects the College’s motto, “Be prepared to excel,” and her life’s work continues to inspire those around her to do just that.
