The Associate Degree Nursing curriculum provides knowledge, skills, and strategies to integrate safety and quality into nursing care, to practice in a dynamic environment, and to meet individual needs which impact health, quality of life, and achievement of potential.
Course work includes and builds upon the domains of healthcare, nursing practice, and the holistic individual. Content emphasizes the nurse as a member of the interdisciplinary team providing safe, individualized care while employing evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and informatics.
Graduates of this program are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEXRN). Employment opportunities are vast within the global health care system and may include positions within acute, chronic, extended, industrial, and community health care facilities.

Program Information
Application Process
Admission to the program is selective, and applications are accepted from February 1- March 1 each year. The application process is as follows:
- Complete the Mitchell Community College application process for general college admission.
- Send all official high school and college transcripts to Mitchell Community College Admissions Office.
- Students will meet with a general student services advisor and subsequently will be assigned to a specific pre-nursing advisor.
- Set an appointment with your assigned pre-nursing advisor to determine your eligibility to apply to the program. When eligible, schedule the ATI TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) test (link will be sent to you by your pre-nursing advisor).
- If eligible to apply, complete the additional Program application with your assigned pre-nursing advisor.
Please remember, completion of general college admission requirements does not constitute application to the Associate Degree Nursing Program.

The Department of Nursing understands and accepts the concept of the open-door policy for general admission to Mitchell Community College. Admission to the College does not guarantee admission to the Associate Degree Nursing program. Admission into the nursing program is selective. In addition to the College’s requirements for admission, the following are minimum requirements for admission to the Associate Degree Nursing program:
- Mitchell Community College Application: Applicants must complete the College application process for general college admission.
- High School or high school equivalency transcript: Graduation from a high school as specified under admission requirements for degree seeking students, complete high school transcript, or equivalent as established by a high school equivalency test.
- College Transcripts: Official transcripts from all previously attended colleges must be received by the College. Grades less than C are not transferable into the Associate Degree Nursing Program.
- Required GPA: Applicants must have a minimum 2.5 cumulative grade point average. General education courses toward the associate in applied science nursing degree must be completed with a grade of C or better.
- Biology Course: Applicants must have completed with a grade of “C” or better, high school biology and/or BIO 110-Principles of Biology, BIO 111- General Biology I, or BIO 168-Anatomy and Physiology I, or equivalent.
- Chemistry Course: Applicants must have completed with a grade of “C” or better, high school chemistry or CHM 131 and 131A lab- Introduction to Chemistry, or CHM 151-General Chemistry I, or equivalent.
- ATI TEAS Testing: Applicant must achieve a minimum adjusted individual test score of 68 percent on the Test of Essential Academic Skills (ATI TEAS). For more information about the ATI TEAS Exam, see the official website at http://www.atitesting.com/default.aspx. TEAS Review books and practice tests are available through the Mitchell Library. Scores are valid for three years and the test may be taken three times at Mitchell, each application cycle. For multiple attempts, the applicants’ highest adjusted individual test score will be used. Applicants must print their result for the application process.
- Associate Degree Nursing Program Application: Applicant must complete Program Application with assigned pre-nursing advisor by the application deadline.
- Nurse Aide I or Medical Assistant: Although not required to apply, applicants seeking admission into the Associate Degree Nursing program must have one of the following prior to the first day of NUR 111 and students who do not meet this requirement will not be able to begin the program even if they have met all other criteria and have initially been accepted.
- Nurse Aide I: Listed on the North Carolina Nurse Aide registry with no pending investigations or substantiated findings.
- Diploma in medical assisting from accredited college.
- Active, unrestricted license as a Licensed Practical Nurse.
- Physical and Mental Health: Applicant will provide validation of satisfactory physical and mental health and current immunizations after receiving conditional acceptance and prior to final admission into the nursing program. Required clinical agency immunizations include:
- 2 MMR vaccines (measles, mumps, rubella), or positive titers
- 2 varicella vaccines or positive titer
- One dose Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis)/TD booster every 10 years
- 2-step tuberculosis skin test, or negative Quantiferon Gold TB, or equivalent
- Influenza seasonal vaccine or approved exemption
- Hepatitis B immunization
NOTE: At times, clinical agencies may change the above requirements or require additional immunizations. Students are expected to meet and maintain compliance with all requirements of clinical agencies throughout the duration of their enrollment even if they are not listed above.
- CPR Certification: Applicant must hold current CPR BLS Provider certification by the American Heart Association and keep CPR maintained throughout the NUR course sequence.
- Background Check and Drug Screen: Meet requirements as prescribed by clinical agencies.
- Student must be 18 years of age prior to first day of the semester (clinical agency requirement).
- Student must carry personal health insurance (clinical agency requirement).
- Nursing students are required to have a laptop computer with access to the Internet. For specific requirements see computer policy.
There are a limited number of seats and applications will be accepted from February 1- March 1 of each year. Qualified applicants will be ranked according to the rubric listed at the end of this document.
Points will be awarded in several categories including: TEAS score, related courses and grades earned, and previous post-secondary education. Students applying for re-admission are required to meet the current admission criteria. No student is a nursing student at Mitchell Community College until the student receives official notification, and the student enrolls in the nursing courses. Applicants must re-apply for each year they wish to be considered for admission.
A limited number of seats will be awarded to high school students. Students who will graduate in spring/summer of the application period will be placed in a separate high school pool and ranked against each other.
Notification process: Evaluated applicants will be notified via email of the results of the selection process. Should space become available in the program, alternates will be contacted based on rank order.
Per the North Carolina General Statute 93 B-14, individuals, foreign graduates or otherwise, who are seeking licensure by examination must have a valid Social Security number to be issued a license to practice nursing (www.ncbon.com).
Qualifications of Graduates for Examination— Graduates of this program are eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN®) which is required for practice as a Registered Nurse.
