Mitchell receives National Association of Schools of Music accreditation

Mitchell Community College recently received accreditation by the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). Mitchell is the first community college in North Carolina to receive this accreditation and one of only 29 community colleges across the United States that are currently accredited by NASM.

Dr. Beverly Brown, Mitchell’s Music Coordinator and Instructor, noted that this achievement was the result of collaborative and tireless efforts by music faculty, students, administration and support from all areas of the College. The three-year accrediting process included a self-study, an official visit by two NASM evaluators (including classroom observations, interviews, and a recital) and several additional documents to further define music at Mitchell. “Our visitors mentioned that we have a very special thing going on here with our music faculty and students,” Dr. Brown said, “and I couldn’t agree more.”

Founded in 1924, NASM is an organization of schools, conservatories, colleges, and universities with approximately 650 accredited institutional members. It establishes national standards for undergraduate and graduate degrees and other credentials for music and music-related disciplines.
