Scholarships Specific for Students with Disabilities

All Information about scholarships should be obtained through contacting the Mitchell Community College Financial Aid office. However, the following listing focuses on specific sources of financial assistance for students with disabilities. Many of the resources listed now have a website, e-mail address, or both so that students can access the most current information on application deadlines, requirements, and the amount of financial assistance.

All students are encouraged to research their specific disability so to find additional scholarship resources.

This organization has numerous scholarships available for oral deaf college students. Students must have been born severely or profoundly deaf or have been deafened before acquiring language. Some awards are geared toward students majoring in specific fields. Several awards are given each year.

The Minnie Pearl Scholarship is $2,500 and is to be used at any accredited junior college, college, university, or technical school in the United States for four years. The scholarship is only for undergraduates. The scholarship is applied directly to tuition. If a recipient continues to maintain at least 3.0 cumulative grade point average, the selection committee will consider this individual for annual renewal through his/her four years of undergraduate study only. Recipients who obtain at least a 3.5 cumulative GPA at the end of each school year are eligible for a $500 bonus which will be paid directly to the individual.

Blind /Visually Impaired Students:

The North Carolina Council of the Blind
Members of the NC Council of the Blind are providing four $1,500 scholarships for blind and visually impaired high school seniors, college, professional and vocational school students. Interested Students should complete an application and return it to the scholarship committee chairman by April 30, 2008. The scholarship winners will be notified by telephone and by mail. The scholarships will be forwarded to the student’s choice of schools to be credited to the 2008-2009 school year.

Lion’s Club Iredell County
Scholarships vary in amount and by location. Students may apply for scholarships with the Lions club where the reside. Statesville residents should inquire with the Statesville Lions club and Taylorsville residents should apply at the Taylorsville Lions Club.

“Will to Win” Scholarship Program
Scholarships will be considered for students suffering from asthma and meeting the following criteria: Graduating student from high school or have already graduated from high school and experiences complications due to asthma. GPA must be 3.5 or better on a 4.0 scale Demonstrate a track record of achievements relevant to entry. Be accepted to an accredited college or university.

Keppra Family Epilepsy Scholarship
Criteria for this $5000 Scholarship includes being a legal and permanent resident of US. Being a person with epilepsy or have a family member/caregiver with epilepsy, and seeking an undergraduate degree.

Pfizer Epilepsy Scholarship Award
A one year $3000 scholarship honoring 25 outstanding students who have epilepsy. Applicant must meet the following criteria:
Must be under a doctor’s care for epilepsy, and be in school as a high school senior who has applied to college, or freshman, sophomore or junior in college. Twenty-five $3000 scholarships will be awarded to students who have overcome the challenges of epilepsy, been successful in school. Participated in activities outside the classroom or in the community. Applicants interested should contact:

Caremark Eric Delson Memorial Scholarship
For students diagnosed with hemophilia or another bleeding disorder. Three $2500 awards are awarded per year. Applications are available in January of each year with a July 1 deadline.

Spinal Bifida Association of America
Applicant must have spinal bifida and must provide a physician’s statement to that effect. The application deadline is April 1. There are two scholarship programs. To be considered for the Four Year SBAA Educational Scholarship, the applicant must be a high school junior entering his or her senior year at the time of application. For the SBAA Educational Scholarship, applicants must be enrolled in or accepted by a college or a junior college, or an approved trade, vocational or business school.

Jesse Brown Memorial Youth Scholarship Program
In memory of the late Secretary of Veterans Affairs, Jesse Brown the Disabled American Veterans has established the Jesse Brown Memorial Youth Scholarship Program. Mr. Brown sustained a serious injury due to a gunshot wound while engaged in combat. Criteria for scholarship includes: Must be 21 years of age or younger and have volunteered a minimum of 100 hours at a VA medical center. Scholarships can be used at any accredited institution of higher learning; to include universities, colleges, community colleges, and vocational schools. A 750 word essay must accompany a self nominated applicant discussing “What volunteering at a VA medical center means to you”.

Foundation for Science and Disability, Inc.
Assistance for students with some physical or sensory disability who study science, mathematics, medicine, computer science or engineering. Students may reapply for $1000 grants each year.

Students with Mental Illness:

Moving Lives Forward Reintegration Scholarship
Annual awards for persons diagnosed with schizophrenia, schizophreniform disorder, schizoaffective disorder, or bipolar disorder who are enrolled in high school equivalency studies, a trade or vocational school, or a two or four year college . Applicant must be US citizens, currently receiving medical treatment for one of the above conditions, and be actively involved in rehabilitative or reintegrative efforts. An essay must be included with the application packet. Number of awards and award amount may vary.
