January 25, 2012

  • The Mitchell Community College Board of Trustees has announced the appointment of Dr. James T. "Tim" Brewer as its next president. Brewer is currently the executive vice president and chief academic officer at Mitchell.
  • The vote took place at the Board's January 25 meeting following a recommendation from the College's Search Committee.
  • The Board's selection of Brewer will be forwarded to the State Board of Community Colleges and is expected to be formally approved at the State Board's next meeting.


January 13, 2012

Dr. Ralph Bentley, chairman of the Mitchell Community College Board of Trustees, announced the names of the three finalists recommended by the Board's Presidential Search Committee.

The finalists are:

  • Dr. James T. "Tim" Brewer, executive vice president and chief academic officer at Mitchell Community College in Statesville. He was previously the executive director of the State Board of Community Colleges and executive assistant to the president of the NC Community College System. Brewer has a bachelor's degree from Mars Hill College and a master's degree and doctorate from NC State University.
  • Dr. Kristi Lee Snuggs, vice president of instruction at Edgecombe Community College in Tarboro. She was previously educational consultant in early childhood, teacher education and public service technologies for the NC Community College System and former program head for early childhood education at Montgomery Community College. Snuggs has a bachelor's degree and master's degree from Appalachian State University and a doctorate from East Carolina University.
  • Dr. Rod Townley, vice president of academic programs at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College in Salisbury. He was previously the dean of the Futures Institute and dean of the Harper Campus at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte. Townley has a bachelor's degree and a master's degree from the University of Southern Colorado and a doctorate from Colorado State University.

The finalists will participate in "meet and greet" opportunities in Statesville and Mooresville, Jan. 17-19 (schedule below)

The names of the three finalists will be submitted to the State Board of Community College for approval. The Mitchell Board of Trustees plans to vote on the new president at its January 25 meeting.

December 15, 2011

  • Mitchell Community College's Search Committee met with Capital Development Services on Dec. 12 to review the list of recommended candidates.
  • The Search Committee plans to interview six candidates on Jan. 9 and 10.
  • From those interviews, the Search Committee plans to narrow the list to three finalists and bring them back for sessions that will involve faculty, staff and representatives from the community. Those sessions are tentatively scheduled for Jan. 17, 18, and 19.

December 5, 2011

  • Mitchell Community College's consultant Capital Development Services received applications from 53 candidates.
  • Representatives from Capital Development Services reviewed all applications and conducted extensive telephone interviews with nine candidates.
  • Interview summaries including work experience were prepared for each of the candidates interviewed and delivered to the Search Committee.
  • Representatives from Capital Development will meet with the Search Committee on Monday, Dec. 12. Out of the nine candidates, they are recommending six for consideration.
  • Due to the holidays, interviews with the Search Committee will be scheduled after Jan. 1, 2012.

  • Direct emails sent to 102 presidents and vice presidents at community colleges in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia.
  • Targeted emails sent to members of the search consultant's list of "Top Influencers" in the southeast—people who may have knowledge of possible applicants for the position.

Faculty and Staff Input

  • Forums held on Nov. 3, 2011 on Statesville and Mooresville campuses
  • Input from both forums summarized and delivered to the search committee the following day.
  • Faculty and staff who were unable to attend a forum and would like to make comments should email Dr. Doug Knight who will forward the comments to Capital Development Services for inclusion in the search process.
  • Members of the community who would like to make comment should email Capital Development Services.

Timeline

  • The Search Committee met with the search consultants on Oct. 10, 2011, and will meet again on Dec. 12.
  • Review of applicant materials will begin Nov. 14.
  • The position will remain open until filled.
  • The target date for announcement of the new president is Jan. or Feb., 2012
