Mitchell’s Curriculum keynote speaker, J.B. Buxton, founding principal of the Education Innovations Group
The 2012 Mitchell Community College graduation ceremonies begin Wednesday, May 9 with a Nurse Pinning Ceremony. Martha Gaddy, a Mitchell nursing program graduate will be the guest speaker. This year marks the 30th anniversary of Mitchell's associate degree nursing program.
On Thursday, May 10, members of the GED (General Education Development) Class of 2012 will graduate. Veronica Vanacore, a GED graduate currently enrolled as a freshman at Mitchell; Letha Foust, a GED graduate who is employed as a basic skills instructional assistant; and Ray Volinsky, a GED graduate who concurrently worked on a Career Readiness Certificate and an industrial maintenance certficate, will be guest speakers.
On Friday May 11, the Curriculum graduation will be held. John B. (J.B.) Buxton, founding principal of the Education Innovations Group, a consulting practice focused on state education strategies for improving PreK-12 and postsecondary public education, will be the keynote speaker. Buxton works with groups such as the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Southern Regional Education Board, the US Department of Education, Complete College America, state departments of education, and nonprofit organizations on such issues as school turnaround, teacher effectiveness, change management and implementation, and college completion. Prior to starting the Education Innovations Group, Buxton served as the Deputy State Superintendent of the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
All three ceremonies begin at 7 p.m. and will be held “under the tent” on the Circle on the main historic campus.
Also scheduled on Friday, May 11 are the two early college graduations. Students from the Visual and Performing Arts (VPAC) program will receive their diplomas at 2 p.m. at Mac Gray Auditorium at Statesville High School. Students from the Collaborative College for Technology and Leadership (CCTL) will receive their diplomas at 3 p.m. on the Circle at Mitchell.
