Mitchell receives $550K for nursing chair

Mitchell Community College received a generous gift of $550,000 from the Buford and Sallie Rimmer estate to establish a nursing chair. The Sallie Beaver Rimmer and Buford Edison Rimmer Endowed Chair will provide an opportunity for selected nursing faculty to undertake professional development projects with the goal of encouraging innovation and promoting academic quality.

Mr. Rimmer was a native of Statesville and his wife of Troutman. He retired as a regional sales manager with Brown, Rogers, Dixon Distributors in Columbia, S.C. Following his retirement, the couple returned to Statesville where Mr. Rimmer served as a deacon and a Sunday school teacher at First Baptist Church. He also served as the church’s director of outreach and chair of their Capital Campaign. Mr. Rimmer served as local chair for the AARP and the Iredell County Council on Aging. Mr. and Mrs. Rimmer, who had no children of their own, shared close relationships with their nieces and nephews.

Their niece Vonne Hall of Gastonia shared his testament, "It is my desire that this bequest honor those members of the nursing profession whose gentle hands contribute so much to our well-being in times of need."

Mr. Rimmer died May 2, 2011, at the age of 98. His wife, Sallie, passed away in 2002. Both received care by nurses who graduated from Mitchell.
