Faculty Staff Incentive Grant Program

The Mitchell Community College Endowment for Excellence Faculty Staff Incentive Grant Program was established to assist faculty efforts to improve teaching and learning and to assist staff efforts to improve college services for students. Faculty and staff are eligible to apply on an annual basis for seed grants of up to $1,000 to fund special projects and initiatives. Since the program's inception a number of exciting new programs have developed including:

The American Dream Players - A newly formed drama club that consists of compensatory education students in Mitchell's Basic Skills Program. These dramas help build students' confidence and vocabulary, enliven their discussions and release their creative energy. Most importantly, they help adults with special needs make sense of their lives and develop self-esteem.

Aerospace and Engineering Team - Students from Mitchell became the first to represent a community college at the prestigious NASA University Student Launch Initiative competition. Students with an interest in rocketry are learning skills to become tomorrow's best and brightest engineers.

Project Yellowstone - Selected biology students from Mitchell Community College and Statesville High School take an annual trip to Yellowstone National Park to learn first-hand the ecology, wildlife, and botany of the area.

Developmental Education Learning Community - Mitchell's Developmental Education Department piloted a learning community linking English, Math, and Communications courses around the theme of success (particularly the success of a Mitchell Community College Student). The learning community followed the guidelines from the Achieving the Dream initiative, a nationwide community college project funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the Lumina Foundation for Education, and others.

Civics Education and English Literacy Project - ESL Students in Mitchell's Basic Skills Department participate in an intensive civics focused program to encourage them to become more engaged in the local community.
