Admissions
The Department of Nursing understands and accepts the concept of the open-door
policy for general admission to Mitchell Community College. Admission
to the college does not, however, guarantee admission to the Associate Degree Nursing
Program. Admission to the nursing program is competitive.
In addition to the Mitchell Community College requirements for admission,
the following are minimum requirements for admission to the Associate
Degree Nursing Program:
1. Completed Mitchell Community College application.
2. Associate Degree Nursing program application completed with advisor.
3. Graduation from an accredited high school, complete high school transcript,
or equivalent as established by the GED test. Additional official transcripts from any previous college attended must be submitted.
4. Maintenance of at least a 2.5 grade-point average. All course work toward
the AAS Nursing degree must be completed with a grade of C or better.
5. Completion of the following pre-requisite courses
within the last five years with a grade of C or better, or demonstration of
competency through challenge exams where applicable. One year of high school
chemistry and/or CHM 131, Introduction to Chemistry, and CHM 131A lab or equivalent.

6. Completion of the College Board Computerized Placement
Tests with minimum scores of:
92 - Reading
86 - Sentence Skills (English)
78 - Arithmetic
55 - Algebra

For a score less than any of those stated above, the student is required to
retest following satisfactory completion of remedial work and upon presenting
written verification of completion of such work.
7. Completion of a Nursing Assistant I course.
8. Current listing as a Nursing Assistant I on the Nurse Aide I Registry
from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Division of
Facility
Services.
9. Validation of satisfactory physical and emotional health and current immunizations
will be required of every applicant after receipt of conditional acceptance
and prior to final admission into the nursing program.
10. Current CPR certification by the American Heart Association at the
healthcare provider level by the time of enrollment into the clinical
nursing component.
11. Satisfactory completion of drug screening and criminal record check
(Clinical agency requirement).
Admission to the Nursing Program is competitive.
A limited number of openings exist in the associate degree nursing program.
Admission consideration will begin January 1 of each year. Applicants will
be accepted until February 15th of each year. Qualified applicants will be
ranked. Points will be awarded in several categories including: pre-requisite
courses and grades earned, related courses and grades earned, grade point average,
and previous post secondary degrees. Students applying for re-admission are
required to meet the current admission criteria. No student is considered to
be a nursing student at Mitchell Community College until they receive official,
written notification of admission to the nursing program as given by the Admissions
Office and the student enrolls in nursing courses. Questions regarding the
admission policies may be directed to Student Services or to the Division Director
of Nursing, Allied Health and Public Service Technologies at Mitchell Community
College.

General Education Elective – 3 hours (Humanities/Fine Arts)
To receive transfer credit, science courses must have been completed within
5 years of admission to the nursing program with a grade of ‘C’ or
better.
Graduates of this program are eligible to write the National
Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN), which is required for practice as a Registered Nurse.
Employment opportunities include hospitals, long-term care facilities, clinics,
physician’s offices, industry, and community agencies.

An estimate of total program costs for the two years is approximately $6,000.00
(based on instate tuition). Costs are heaviest during the first year
of the program.
Mitchell Community College awards several scholarships designated for students
accepted to the associate degree nursing program each year. To be considered

student aid available on the web at www.fafsa.ed.gov and a Mitchell Community
College Scholarship Application available on the College’s website
