Motivating Students Series
Negative feedback can lead to a
negative class atmosphere. Be specific when giving negative feedback and tie
comments to a specific task or performance—not to a specific student.
Cushion negative comments with positive compliments about aspects of the
task that students did well and be sensitive to "offhanded" remarks that
might engender feelings of inadequacy. Often students want to know the
"answer"—"what was it I should have said or done to make it right?" Avoid
pleas from students for the "right answer" which can rob them of the
opportunity to think and problem-solve for themselves. Ask for suggestions
of possible approaches to the problem, suggest sources, and encourage them
to build on existing skills. Always praise students for small, independent
steps. —Submitted by Employee Development

I hope Fall Convocation was as meaningful for each of you as
it was for me. First of all, congratulations to our Grier Excellence in
Education winners: Jill Channing (faculty), Nanci Burt (adjunct faculty),
Donna Arnett (professional staff) and Joyce Chambers (support staff).
Unfortunately, Joyce was not able to be present for the presentation last
Thursday and we presented her award to her earlier this week. Please be sure
to let these four folks know how much we appreciate their good work. We are
also grateful to Dr. Ralph Bentley, Chair of the Mitchell Community College
Board of Trustees, for taking time from his busy schedule to present these
important awards. The selection of Mr. Fletcher Wolfe as the recipient of
our Distinguished Alumnus Award was another high point of the Convocation.
As pointed out by Alumni Association President Dr. John Gentry, Mr. Wolfe’s
credentials as a musician and world traveler are certainly impressive. Our
very own Mitchell historian Bill Moose did himself and all of us proud with
his witty and informative review of the lives and influence of the Mitchell
sisters on the development of Mitchell College. Bill has a unique talent for
making his scholarly knowledge of history—and especially Mitchell
history—vivid and entertaining. By the way, the video clip that was shown
just before Bill’s presentation was done by Mr. Tony Lellie and a student
from Mitchell’s Early College program. The clip should be on myCIRCLE by now
for anyone who missed it or would like to see it again. Special thanks are
due as well to Dr. Tim Brewer, Vice-President for Instruction, for his words
of greeting; to John Scott, SGA President, for his excellent welcome; to
Jason Harvey for his beautiful invocation, and to Jane Pardue who played the
organ for our processional and recessional. We also need to thank John Scott
and the Student Government Association for the campus-wide lunch following
the Convocation ceremony. In these often trying times it is wonderful for
the College community to get together and celebrate our mission of service
and our pride in being part of a dynamic academic community. |
