Motivating Students Series
Negative feedback can lead to a
negative class atmosphere. Be specific when giving negative feedback and tie
comments to a specific task or performance—not to a specific student.
Cushion negative comments with positive compliments about aspects of the
task that students did well and be sensitive to "offhanded" remarks that
might engender feelings of inadequacy. Often students want to know the
"answer"—"what was it I should have said or done to make it right?" Avoid
pleas from students for the "right answer" which can rob them of the
opportunity to think and problem-solve for themselves. Ask for suggestions
of possible approaches to the problem, suggest sources, and encourage them
to build on existing skills. Always praise students for small, independent
steps. —Submitted by Employee Development

It seems appropriate to me that we have a fall and spring
convocation each year in order to open the academic year and to close the
academic year. Fall Convocation, which we will have this year on Thursday,
September 25, focuses on the role of excellence in teaching and the success
and support of our outstanding alumni. Grier Excellence in Education Awards
will be given on this occasion along with our Distinguished Alumni Award.
Recognizing the outstanding work of faculty and staff and our alumni frames
the work that we do during the year. Our speaker on this occasion will be
Mr. Bill Moose, instructor of history and the author of our official History
of Mitchell Community College. Mr. Moose will speak about the Mitchell
sisters for whom the College is named and who served the College in the late
19th century. Their story is a remarkable one which gives a new insight into
the lives of these remarkable women who devoted themselves to education. The
Mitchell sisters, as you will learn, are a very special part of our history.
Our Spring Convocation is focused on the accomplishments of our students
during the academic year. Next April 2, 2009, we will recognize the
outstanding work of students by presenting them various awards for their
accomplishments. This occasion is completely devoted to our students and to
the celebration of their success. I would hope that as we participate in our
Fall Convocation and celebrate the good work of our faculty and staff we
will keep in mind that it leads to the celebration of student success at our
Spring Convocation. I, for one, rather like the symmetry of these two events
and the reminder that Mitchell Community College is devoted to our
commitment to teaching and learning. |
