Motivating Students Series
Negative feedback can lead to a
negative class atmosphere. Be specific when giving negative feedback and tie
comments to a specific task or performance—not to a specific student.
Cushion negative comments with positive compliments about aspects of the
task that students did well and be sensitive to "offhanded" remarks that
might engender feelings of inadequacy. Often students want to know the
"answer"—"what was it I should have said or done to make it right?" Avoid
pleas from students for the "right answer" which can rob them of the
opportunity to think and problem-solve for themselves. Ask for suggestions
of possible approaches to the problem, suggest sources, and encourage them
to build on existing skills. Always praise students for small, independent
steps. —Submitted by Employee Development

The United Way Campaign was kicked off at our faculty-staff
assembly on Thursday, September 11, by Nina Reid and Gail Elmore. As anyone
could tell from the work these two folks have already done and the high
energy they projected at our meeting, they really plan to meet their goal of
$18,000. The various incentives that they have put in place as well as their
creative work with students should carry the day. The real issue behind all
this excitement and hard work is the funding of the 23 agencies in Iredell
County that meet the needs of over 90,000 people each year in our community.
The video they presented really said it all. There are so many needs,
particularly this year with the down turn in the economy and so many folks
being laid off from jobs or having their hours reduced in the job they have,
that United Way funds are more needed than ever just to cover basic costs of
organizations such as Fifth Street Shelter, My Sister’s House, Elder Care,
to name only three. As our guest speaker, Patrice Reynolds, pointed out,
agencies such as Hospice depend on United Way funds in order to provide
services to folks who do not have insurance and cannot pay for help. Most of
us here at Mitchell have encountered students and fellow employees who have
benefited from assistance from a United Way
Agency at some point in their lives. In a sense, the United Way puts its
arms around the community through the contributions it receives. Giving,
however, is a very personal choice and every individual should make their
decision about what they want to give their hard-earned dollars to with both
their head and their heart. No one should feel compelled or coerced to make
a contribution they do not want to make. My wife always told our children
something she had read that Dr. Martin Luther King’s mother had said to him
about his allowance when he was a boy—"Spend some, save some and share
some." |
