Motivating Students Series
Negative feedback can lead to a
negative class atmosphere. Be specific when giving negative feedback and tie
comments to a specific task or performance—not to a specific student.
Cushion negative comments with positive compliments about aspects of the
task that students did well and be sensitive to "offhanded" remarks that
might engender feelings of inadequacy. Often students want to know the
"answer"—"what was it I should have said or done to make it right?" Avoid
pleas from students for the "right answer" which can rob them of the
opportunity to think and problem-solve for themselves. Ask for suggestions
of possible approaches to the problem, suggest sources, and encourage them
to build on existing skills. Always praise students for small, independent
steps. —Submitted by Employee Development

At 8:50 a.m. this Thursday, September 11, our campus
community will memorialize the terrible events of 9/11. Students, faculty,
staff and visitors will gather on the Circle for three minutes of silence
for the victims of 9/11 while the bell at Broad Street United Methodist
Church is rung. Over three thousand folks were killed when two hijacked
planes flew into the twin towers of the World Trade Center. Another hijacked
plane crashed into the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and another hijacked
plane crashed in a field in Pennsylvania after passengers overran the
terrorists. The new century was barely a year old when the blunt force of
terrorism hi t this country with enormous power. It was a sobering wake-up
call that the cold war had been replaced by another threat of perhaps even
greater danger—worldwide terrorism. Taking a few minutes out of our day to
mark this tragic event seems fitting both as an act of remembering the
victims and as a means of acknowledging the challenges of terrorism in the
modern age. While we often feel we live outside the larger events playing
out on the world stage, there has never been a more urgent time when we
needed to understand the events that shape our lives in countless ways. We
still face the big questions about religious and political conflict, about
economic issues at home and abroad, about cultural and racial differences,
about how we can share essential resources in a growing world population. As
we gather on the Circle this Thursday morning, I trust that we will each in
our own way reflect on the challenging realities of the 21st Century. |
