Motivating Students Series
Negative feedback can lead to a
negative class atmosphere. Be specific when giving negative feedback and tie
comments to a specific task or performance—not to a specific student.
Cushion negative comments with positive compliments about aspects of the
task that students did well and be sensitive to "offhanded" remarks that
might engender feelings of inadequacy. Often students want to know the
"answer"—"what was it I should have said or done to make it right?" Avoid
pleas from students for the "right answer" which can rob them of the
opportunity to think and problem-solve for themselves. Ask for suggestions
of possible approaches to the problem, suggest sources, and encourage them
to build on existing skills. Always praise students for small, independent
steps. —Submitted by Employee Development

Be prepared! The old Boy Scout mantra has a lot of truth in
it on many counts. With hurricane season right upon us and with Hurricane
Hanna bearing down on the Carolinas this coming weekend, it is best to give
a little forethought to "being prepared" for whatever comes, whether that be
full-blown (pardon the pun) hurricane, a tropical storm, or just torrential
rains or even if the storm changes direction again. We will most likely have
some challenging weather during the current school year, and giving some
thought beforehand regarding some of the needs we may have is well worth the
effort. Since we are a commuter school, getting your automobile ready is an
important step. Do you have a flashlight in your car? Check it from time to
time to be sure the batteries are in working condition. Do you have some
drinking water available in your vehicle? Make sure it is changed out from
time-to-time. Do you have an umbrella and a rain coat in your car? Why not
put the old one in a plastic bag on the ready. Do you carry a cell phone
with you? Be sure it stays charged. What about an ice scraper or de-icer?
Take a few minutes and think about what your particular needs might be in
the event of a significant weather event. You may get to test your plan this
weekend since Hanna—or the remnants of Hanna—is scheduled to reach Charlotte
this Friday evening. In all instances, keep an eye on the MCC web site for
updates on school closings or late starts in the event of bad weather. And
while we are on the subject of being prepared, all the same lessons apply to
your being a successful student. Do you have your textbook and materials
with you before you go to class? Are you reading your material BEFORE you go
to class? Are you keeping good notes in an organized fashion? Are you
planning a schedule of work, family, and study so that you have the TIME to
meet your obligations in each category? If you stop and think about it,
those Boy Scouts knew what they were talking about! |
