Motivating Students Series
Negative feedback can lead to a
negative class atmosphere. Be specific when giving negative feedback and tie
comments to a specific task or performance—not to a specific student.
Cushion negative comments with positive compliments about aspects of the
task that students did well and be sensitive to "offhanded" remarks that
might engender feelings of inadequacy. Often students want to know the
"answer"—"what was it I should have said or done to make it right?" Avoid
pleas from students for the "right answer" which can rob them of the
opportunity to think and problem-solve for themselves. Ask for suggestions
of possible approaches to the problem, suggest sources, and encourage them
to build on existing skills. Always praise students for small, independent
steps. —Submitted by Employee Development

For those of us who have spent our working lives involved in
education, there is nothing to compare with the excitement of the beginning
of a new school year. Indeed, each new academic year has its own challenges
and satisfactions. Our biggest challenge this year was another significant
growth in enrollment. In fact, it looks like we very well may reach 3,000
registrations in college curriculum programs this fall! At times the numbers
seemed overwhelming, especially on Tuesday, August 12, the first day of LATE
registration. On the plus side we were blessed with much cooler temperatures
than during the preceding weeks of July and early August. And above all, it
was a joy to see so many folks who want to improve their skills and their
educational achievement. As I have walked around campus from time to time
during the past week, I have been struck by the overall good humor of the
students I have met and of their apparent seriousness of purpose. I have
also been proud of the great work of our faculty and staff under sometimes
stressful circumstances due to the press of so many students waiting to be
advised, to get financial aid, to fill out an application, to ask a
question, and to complete dozens of other tasks. The universal good humor
and patience of our employees across the board—even including the security
folks working on parking—was remarkable. Everyone deserves a pat on the back
and a big THANK YOU. Now we move on to our real mission, which is to help
these students grow to their full potential. |
