Motivating Students Series
Negative feedback can lead to a
negative class atmosphere. Be specific when giving negative feedback and tie
comments to a specific task or performance—not to a specific student.
Cushion negative comments with positive compliments about aspects of the
task that students did well and be sensitive to "offhanded" remarks that
might engender feelings of inadequacy. Often students want to know the
"answer"—"what was it I should have said or done to make it right?" Avoid
pleas from students for the "right answer" which can rob them of the
opportunity to think and problem-solve for themselves. Ask for suggestions
of possible approaches to the problem, suggest sources, and encourage them
to build on existing skills. Always praise students for small, independent
steps. —Submitted by Employee Development

| Graduation week at Mitchell has arrived, the big white tent is going up and
everyone is excited about preparing to celebrate student success. On
Wednesday evening, May 7, at 7 p.m., we will gather on the Circle for our
Nursing Pinning Ceremony, where we will recognize the completion of the
training program for 42 students who have completed this demanding
curriculum. This is a very special time for our hard-working nursing
students and their families. This program will provide our medical community
in Iredell County with a new group of professional personnel critical to the
health industry. On Thursday evening, May 8, at 7 p.m., again on the Circle,
we will celebrate the achievement of the GED High School Diploma for 256
students who have completed their requirements during the past year. If you
haven’t attended a GED High School Diploma graduation at Mitchell you have
missed a real treat. This realization of a significant educational goal in
folk’s lives is one of the highlights of the year. And finally, on Friday
evening at 7 p.m. on the Circle, we will award 245 college degrees, diplomas
and certificates to students who are completing a variety of programs. Each
graduate will be celebrating a major achievement in their education and
training. The sense of accomplishment at completing an important task will
be palpable in the evening air. In addition, the events of the past weekend
got things moving at a pretty fast clip. The MCCEE 5K Run drew over 120
participants on a beautiful Saturday morning. Following the race, our Fire
Science students provided a breathtaking ladder demonstration on the Circle
as they scaled a 35-foot ladder anchored only by four students with ropes
attached to the top of the ladder. Saturday also was the annual Alumni
Reunion and Luncheon. Windy Werts-Ivey, our new Alumni Specialist, planned
an interesting array of activities that would appeal to students from every
era. The class of 1958 celebrated its 50th reunion by going on campus tours
or attending mini-workshops led by faculty and staff. It was another
beautiful spring day and everyone seemed to have a grand time. These last
days of the spring semester have been filled with interesting and joyous
opportunities to celebrate our students, both past and present. |
