Motivating Students Series
Negative feedback can lead to a
negative class atmosphere. Be specific when giving negative feedback and tie
comments to a specific task or performance—not to a specific student.
Cushion negative comments with positive compliments about aspects of the
task that students did well and be sensitive to "offhanded" remarks that
might engender feelings of inadequacy. Often students want to know the
"answer"—"what was it I should have said or done to make it right?" Avoid
pleas from students for the "right answer" which can rob them of the
opportunity to think and problem-solve for themselves. Ask for suggestions
of possible approaches to the problem, suggest sources, and encourage them
to build on existing skills. Always praise students for small, independent
steps. —Submitted by Employee Development

Roll out the welcome mat! The North Carolina Community College System Board
of Trustees will be holding its monthly meeting on the Mitchell campus this
Thursday and Friday, April 17 and 18. The 21-member board will be led by
Chair Hilda Pinnix-Ragland during their two-day meeting. The Board regularly
meets at the System offices on Jones Street in Raleigh, but a couple of
times a year they meet on one of the 58 college campuses in the System. This
will be the first time in the history of Mitchell that the State Board has
met in Statesville. Members of the System Office staff will begin arriving
on Wednesday, April 16, to prepare for the meeting. Board members will begin
arriving on Thursday morning at 10 a.m. when they will have the opportunity
to go on campus tours led by officers of the Student Government Association.
Board Members will be parking that morning in the lot behind the Library
which will be closed Thursday morning for that purpose. The Board will
convene at our new Workforce Development and Technology Building at the
Continuing Education campus on West Front Street at 11:30 a.m. for lunch and
reports by the System Office and a presentation by Mitchell Community
College. Our presentation will focus on the History of Mitchell by
Bill Moose, a Powerpoint campus tour, an overview of three academic
programs: physics, our QEP, and Focused Industry Training. Thursday
afternoon, the board members will be involved in various committee meetings.
Dinner on Thursday evening for the Board Members will feature music by the
MCC Student Jazz Band and songs by Karla Causey. The actual official Board
meeting begins at 9 a.m. on Friday and will be held in the Continuing
Education Center Auditorium on the West Front Street campus. This will mark
System President Martin Lancaster’s last official meeting of the State Board
of Trustees prior to his retirement on May 1. His successor, Dr. Scott
Rawls, is also expected to attend the meeting. Please offer our special
guests a word of welcome. |
