Motivating Students Series
Negative feedback can lead to a
negative class atmosphere. Be specific when giving negative feedback and tie
comments to a specific task or performance—not to a specific student.
Cushion negative comments with positive compliments about aspects of the
task that students did well and be sensitive to "offhanded" remarks that
might engender feelings of inadequacy. Often students want to know the
"answer"—"what was it I should have said or done to make it right?" Avoid
pleas from students for the "right answer" which can rob them of the
opportunity to think and problem-solve for themselves. Ask for suggestions
of possible approaches to the problem, suggest sources, and encourage them
to build on existing skills. Always praise students for small, independent
steps. —Submitted by Employee Development

| Over the past few weeks our faculty and students have participated in a
number of conferences and workshops around the state and the region. I am
particularly pleased that our students have been so directly involved in
many of these meetings and experiences. The SGA went to its state conference
this past weekend (March 28-30) in Raleigh and again made a significant
showing. SGA advisor Nikkole Davis and six MCC students attended the
conference and had the opportunity to hear Chelsea Clinton speak. The
Minority Male Mentoring Conference was held this past Monday through
Wednesday in Research Triangle Park and Mr. Manuel Dudley and Mr. Randall
Willie led an enthusiastic group of six students. Speakers and session
leaders offered many ideas for assisting students—especially minority male
students—successfully complete not only their educational but also their
life goals. Ms. Sally Dellinger reports that the Southern Organization of
Human Services meeting was very successful with a number of students from
her program attending. Mitchell won first place in the poster competition
among student clubs. Teams were present from North and South Carolina,
Florida, Virginia, and Tennessee. Student Brian Long gave a presentation on
Gangs and Gang Involvement which was very well attended. Phi Beta Lambda (PBL)
will be attending its annual meeting in Raleigh this week. Faculty advisor
Ms. Susan Stinson will be with the group as they participate in contests and
other activities. The Piedmont Area Educational Consortium held its Fourth
Biennial Leadership Teaching and Learning Conference in Wrightsville Beach
last week and Mr. Steve Herman, co-chair of the organization, was
responsible for the development of the program focusing on "hot-topics" for
our 58 community colleges. Ms. Mary Ellen Goldstein and Ms. Zaneta Summers
of our Institutional Research Office and Dr. Doug Knight, instructor of
physics, made presentations at the conference. Spring is certainly a busy
time and it is great to see students, faculty, and staff joining together in
these and other great learning experience in addition to their classroom
work. |
