Motivating Students Series
Negative feedback can lead to a
negative class atmosphere. Be specific when giving negative feedback and tie
comments to a specific task or performance—not to a specific student.
Cushion negative comments with positive compliments about aspects of the
task that students did well and be sensitive to "offhanded" remarks that
might engender feelings of inadequacy. Often students want to know the
"answer"—"what was it I should have said or done to make it right?" Avoid
pleas from students for the "right answer" which can rob them of the
opportunity to think and problem-solve for themselves. Ask for suggestions
of possible approaches to the problem, suggest sources, and encourage them
to build on existing skills. Always praise students for small, independent
steps. —Submitted by Employee Development

The 2008 Spring Writers Series is off to a great start. Former MCC faculty
member Joseph Bathanti gave a reading last Thursday evening, March 19, to an
almost-full Rotary Auditorium. This was a perfect kick-off for the series
which continues through April 10 with an "Open Mic Night." Th e brochures,
bookmarks, and newspaper articles promoting these nine outstanding speakers
and events have been splendid, thanks to the work of Kathy Holland, Judy
Phillips, Vicki Holland, Dr. Bill Findt and especially Dr. Roxanne Newton,
who organized the whole series. As I have always pointed out, it is
remarkable what can be accomplished with team work. Not only does the work
get done, but each member of the team adds significant value to the project.
We all need to support this outstanding series of writers. Be sure to
consult the schedule and attend one or more of the readings. It is a great
way to discover a writer you perhaps have never even heard of. Spending an
hour with someone who has thought deeply and seriously about words and ideas
can be an invigorating experience. Let part of your "getting ready for
spring" be to attend one or more of these outstanding events. |
