Motivating Students Series
Negative feedback can lead to a
negative class atmosphere. Be specific when giving negative feedback and tie
comments to a specific task or performance—not to a specific student.
Cushion negative comments with positive compliments about aspects of the
task that students did well and be sensitive to "offhanded" remarks that
might engender feelings of inadequacy. Often students want to know the
"answer"—"what was it I should have said or done to make it right?" Avoid
pleas from students for the "right answer" which can rob them of the
opportunity to think and problem-solve for themselves. Ask for suggestions
of possible approaches to the problem, suggest sources, and encourage them
to build on existing skills. Always praise students for small, independent
steps. —Submitted by Employee Development

SPRING BREAK! The week of March 10 through March 15 will give students a
welcomed few days from classes and provide a breather for faculty before we
begin the sprint to graduation on May 9. Even though "spring" doesn’t
officially begin until March 20, the tulips have begun to sprout at the
front of the campus. It won’t be long until they are standing tall and
waving at the traffic coming down Broad Street. Awards Day Convocation and
Spring Court and lunch on the lawn are just around the corner. While winter
may raise it chilly head again, we can pretty well say "goodbye" to cold
days and any possibility of snow, ice and sleet. Spring at Mitchell is a
very special time as the campus puts on its magnificent display of colors
with camellias and azaleas and rhododendrons in bloom. It’s especially
gratifying as people begin to celebrate the completion of another academic
year. In fact, it’s difficult not to catch the spirit and excitement of
another milestone reached and the impending success of students who will
receive their pins, certificates, diplomas and degrees in only a few weeks.
I’ve occasionally said that school work is a bit like farming; the only
difference is that our "crop" is harvested in the spring rather than in the
fall. Don’t let another spring get away without breathing in the hope and
promise that it brings with it. Join in the activities and get the spirit of
celebrating possibilities, of dreaming of success, and setting goals of hope
for the future. Use a little bit of your time during "SPRING BREAK" to
reflect on where you have been and where your hope to go. And while you are
at it, take a moment to celebrate where you are right now: embraced by the
spirit of Mitchell Community College. |
