Motivating Students Series
Negative feedback can lead to a
negative class atmosphere. Be specific when giving negative feedback and tie
comments to a specific task or performance—not to a specific student.
Cushion negative comments with positive compliments about aspects of the
task that students did well and be sensitive to "offhanded" remarks that
might engender feelings of inadequacy. Often students want to know the
"answer"—"what was it I should have said or done to make it right?" Avoid
pleas from students for the "right answer" which can rob them of the
opportunity to think and problem-solve for themselves. Ask for suggestions
of possible approaches to the problem, suggest sources, and encourage them
to build on existing skills. Always praise students for small, independent
steps. —Submitted by Employee Development

I continue to be amazed at all the good things that occur on our campuses
each week here at Mitchell. The Red Cross collected almost 40 pints of blood
on campus last week. This is a wonderful gift to our community and
especially those who need blood as a result of accidents and surgeries. I
know from first-hand experience the value of having whole blood available
during and following open-heart surgery. Giving blood is truly a gift of
life. I want to thank those who took the time to give blood and those who
helped facilitate the visit of the Bloodmobile. I also learned last week
that MCC students in one of our business classes had operated a "store" last
year as a class project and had earned over $600 which they donated to
Barium Springs. These students could easily have used the money for some fun
event or activity for themselves but they chose to make a gift to a worthy
charity instead. Our folks in the Early Childhood Education program have
taken on supporting the March of Dimes Walk this spring which will originate
on the Mitchell campus. This effort will take the support and commitment of
a number of folks here at the College in order to make this event a success.
Students and employees will likely raise over $1,000 for research on the
prevention of birth defects. I often get defensive when folks I am around
make sweeping, negative remarks about "young people," "college students,"
and "academic types" in general. I know from personal experience that the
majority of young folks are hard-working and caring people who want a better
life for themselves and for others. Of course there are a few rotten eggs
who stink up the whole crate, but that is no reason to generalize in a
destructive and unfair way about the majority of students—especially
Mitchell students. I appreciate all the good things our students do on
campus and in the community, and I take my hat off to the faculty and staff
who mentor and lead them in these activities. Congratulations on a job well
done. |
