Motivating Students Series
Negative feedback can lead to a
negative class atmosphere. Be specific when giving negative feedback and tie
comments to a specific task or performance—not to a specific student.
Cushion negative comments with positive compliments about aspects of the
task that students did well and be sensitive to "offhanded" remarks that
might engender feelings of inadequacy. Often students want to know the
"answer"—"what was it I should have said or done to make it right?" Avoid
pleas from students for the "right answer" which can rob them of the
opportunity to think and problem-solve for themselves. Ask for suggestions
of possible approaches to the problem, suggest sources, and encourage them
to build on existing skills. Always praise students for small, independent
steps. —Submitted by Employee Development

This past week was a very busy one. It began with the MLK Community
Breakfast at the Civic Center. Some 350 people were in attendance and I was
asked to do the introductions of elected officials and dignitaries as part
of the program. It was a wonderful event and a great occasion for our
community to join together to honor Dr. King. Then on Tuesday evening at the
Statesville Chamber of Commerce Annual Meeting and Awards Banquet, I had the
surprise of my life: I was named Citizen of the Year by the Chamber! Laurel
had known about this honor for a couple of weeks (as well as did a few of my
other "friends") and not a one of them told me! I am a bit overwhelmed by
this honor. I feel that everyone at Mitchell has given me the opportunity to
work in this community these past eighteen years. Without the support and
encouragement of our Board of Trustees and all the folks who work at
Mitchell, this recognition would not have come my way. Then on Wednesday I
drove to Lumberton, North Carolina for the quarterly meeting of the North
Carolina Community College President’s Association where I did a
presentation on the College Information System on Thursday morning. I drove
back to Statesville after lunch on Thursday in order to be here for the
Friday afternoon and Saturday morning Board of Trustees Annual Retreat. Not
every week is quite this busy but most have their challenges. When you are
having fun, as the saying goes, time flies!
