Motivating Students Series
Negative feedback can lead to a
negative class atmosphere. Be specific when giving negative feedback and tie
comments to a specific task or performance—not to a specific student.
Cushion negative comments with positive compliments about aspects of the
task that students did well and be sensitive to "offhanded" remarks that
might engender feelings of inadequacy. Often students want to know the
"answer"—"what was it I should have said or done to make it right?" Avoid
pleas from students for the "right answer" which can rob them of the
opportunity to think and problem-solve for themselves. Ask for suggestions
of possible approaches to the problem, suggest sources, and encourage them
to build on existing skills. Always praise students for small, independent
steps. —Submitted by Employee Development

Congratulations
to Jeff Benfield and his IT team for getting our new computers up and
running over the Christmas holiday so that everything was operating smoothly
for Spring registration on Thursday, January 3. As you can imagine, this was
a major undertaking and required some pretty fast footwork by a number of
folks. We are very fortunate to have a great group working on our
information technology and making sure that our servers and the over 700
desktop computers on campus are working at all times. You will recall the
challenges we faced last November with early registration shortly after the
installation of Release 18 for the Datatel System. Having over 100 faculty
and staff users on the system at one time during registration just didn’t
work! In spite of the technical difficulties, our faculty and staff were
able to register over 1000 students during that terrible day. We got through
it, but it was not pretty. While the technology is essential to our
effective operation, we should never forget that hard-working and committed
faculty and staff are the ultimate ingredient in making sure that we carry
out our mission. Let me thank everyone on campus for serving students to the
best of their ability in good times and not-so-good times. Real skill,
patience, and fortitude are required to carry out a task under
less-than-ideal conditions. That’s when we find out what it means to be a
"professional." For sure, we have many, many truly professional folks as
employees of Mitchell Community College. The College benefits and, most
importantly, so do our students. Have a "Happy New Year!" |
