Motivating Students Series
Students’ motivation to learn is as varied as the number of students. Some are highly motivated and self-directed while others expect their instructors to inspire them. There is no magic wand to wave over the class to challenge and stimulate learning. There are, however, a number of factors to consider that tend to motivate students. They include interest in the subject matter, perception of its usefulness, general desire to achieve, self-confidence and self-esteem, and patience and persistence. Some students may also need the approval of others or challenges to overcome to get motivated. (Specific strategies to aid students toward becoming self-motivated independent learners will be covered in subsequent articles.)

College Council Holiday Luncheon
Thanks to the College Council for a wonderful holiday luncheon. The Council is very ably led this year by Cheryl Sells. Please express your appreciation to individual members of the Council from your work area for their good planning and hard work in putting this event on for all of us to enjoy. The holiday decorations at Mitchell continue to give the campus a very special and festive air. We have Mike Brown and his crew to thank for the extra time and work it takes to put up the beautiful natural wreathes on all of our campuses and to decorate the porch of the Historic Main Building. We are so fortunate to have a beautiful campus and to have folks who care to make it look even more beautiful this time of the year.

Holiday Luncheon Part 2
On behalf of the College Council I would like to extend our Best Holiday Wishes to everyone. I also would like to thank each and every one of the people who made the Holiday Luncheon last Thursday a success. The fellowship with friends and co-workers was enjoyed along with the wonderful food. Thanks to the wonderful generosity of the people here at this institution, the College Council was able to make a sizeable donation of non-perishable food items as well as a cash donation to charity. So thank you, everyone, for adding to our holidays this warm and giving experience!

Cheryl Sells and Wendy Tobin helped serve the delicious meal.

Donna Worrell gave Santa her wish list.

The facilities technicians had a great time at the luncheon.

Lisa Taylor pulled out her Santa hat for the occasion.

Rebecca Manning and Betsy Yarborough enjoyed the meal.

Some of the nursing faculty ate with former Director of Nursing, Kaye Miller.

Donna Etheridge, Sarah Davis and Judy Morgan eat the yummy turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and cranberry sauce.

Student Services staff, Nancy Fields, Dan Manning, Sandy Wallace and Bonnie McCurry (left to right), got into the spirit of the holidays.
