Motivating Students Series
Tell students what they need to do to
succeed in your course. Don’t wait for them to figure it out on their own
—they may not. Reassure students that they can do well and point out key
problems, concepts, and information blocks that they need to be able to
solve, understand, and/or explain to be successful. Offer extra help,
resources, and strategies to help them grasp the material. Avoid messages
that reinforce your power as an instructor or emphasize extrinsic reward.
Instead of saying, "I require," "your must," or "you should," stress "I
think you will find..." or "I will be interested in your assessment of..."

| Although there was not much
participation this year, Halloween was still celebrated at Mitchell
Community College in style! On Thursday, October 28, a costume contest,
sponsored by SGA, was held in the Montgomery Student Center. |
Students line up for the student costume contest. The 1st place student winner of the costume contest was Steve Behrent as the "Pimpin' Vampire" SGA President Melanie Hillman dressed as a butterfly. MCC MIND Center Coordinator, Sandra Kaiser, was a judge, but also dressed in costume for the occasion. MCC staff members, Rhonda Fox, Judy Phillips and Sharon McCall participated in the Faculty/Staff costume contest. Sharon McCall, MCC's Printing Technician, won 1st place in the Faculty/Staff costume contest. Judy Phillips, MCC's Printing & Graphic Design Services Center Coordinator, gave her best impression of "Regan" from "The Exorcist"
A group of faculty & staff members decided to dress up on Friday, October 29. (Left to right: Judy Phillips, Judy Erickson, Greg Stanley, Karen Krider, Ann Saunders & Sharon McCall)
