Motivating Students Series
Students’ motivation to learn is as varied as the number of students. Some are highly motivated and self-directed while others expect their instructors to inspire them. There is no magic wand to wave over the class to challenge and stimulate learning. There are, however, a number of factors to consider that tend to motivate students. They include interest in the subject matter, perception of its usefulness, general desire to achieve, self-confidence and self-esteem, and patience and persistence. Some students may also need the approval of others or challenges to overcome to get motivated. Fall Convocation was August 26 on the main campus of Mitchell Community College. Festivities kicked off at 11 a.m. with the SGA-sponsored Vendor Fair in front of the Montgomery Student Center. Music was provided by DJ Infinite as students walked around to view the student organization tables. For a second year in a row, the Human Services Club won best table. At 12 p.m. everyone convened in Shearer Hall for the annual convocation program and presentation of faculty awards for outstanding service. Mr. Arnold Nunnery, President of Iredell Memorial Hospital's Health Care System, gave the keynote address. Immediately following the program, the club fair continued for another hour, while students, faculty, staff and guests enjoyed boxed lunches provided compliments of the SGA. —Submitted by Nikkole Davis-Amerson (09.07.04)
