The August 31
Fall Convocation at 11 a.m. in Shearer Hall was a spirited celebration of
the official opening of the College’s 150th academic year. Faculty and
educational support staff wearing academic regalia processed to organ music
played by Mr. Rex Klett, director of the Learning Resources Center. Student
Government Association president Ashley Peoples welcomed students, faculty,
administration, staff, and visitors and invited everyone to have lunch in
the Montgomery Student Center after the ceremony. Following the greeting
from Dr. Tim Brewer, Vice-President for Instruction, the invocation was
given by the Reverend Steve Scott, minister of First Presbyterian Church.
Dr. Ralph L. Bentley, chair of the Board of Trustees, presented R. D. Grier
Excellence in Education Awards to Mrs. Cabanna Pierce and Dr. Doug Knight.
Dr. William Findt, Executive Vice-President for Development, introduced Mr.
Bill Moose, MCC instructor and author of the recently published A History
of Mitchell Community College, who gave fascinating insights into
student life and events in 1856—the year the College opened. In his closing
remarks, president Douglas Eason reminded the audience to visit student-club
displays and enjoy the lunch provided by the Student Government Association.
