SELF MOTIVATION SERIES
(This series will explore the
role of what has been identified as the "inner voice," "self-talk," and
"intra-communication," etc. in effecting positive outcomes.)
Changing negative and self-defeating "self-talk"
can be encouraged by others, but it is ultimately up to the individual to
become aware of negative thinking, monitor it, and change it. One of the
best ways to do this is to be on the lookout for and avoid tunnel vision
(seeing only one aspect of a situation and ignoring or excluding all other
relevant information). One remedy is to avoid dichotomous reasoning (seeing
everything as black or white). This type of self-talk sounds like the
following: all or nothing, win or loose, succeed or fail, love or hate, and
everything is good or bad. Typical words include: "never", "all", "every",
"everybody", and "always". Teachers can help by encouraging students to
think in terms of gray areas. They can be taught to analyze situations in
terms of percentages. Seldom is anything 100%. It may be 50%, 20%, or only
5%. Strive for a balanced point of view. Remember the ancient Greek ideal:
"nothing to excess". —Submitted by Employee

My name is Corinne Meader and I am a counselor/admissions specialist. Prior to working at Mitchell Community College, I was employed at McLeod Addictive Disease Center. I moved to NC almost 2 years ago from Ohio with my cat, Lola, and dog, Oscar. In January, I joined Mitchell Community College as a Motorsports Coordinator in the Small Business Center. My responsibilities include partnering with local agencies to offer special small business seminars for the motorsports industry and performing a limited-needs assessment to ascertain training requests within the business. In addition, I am working to make connections between local entrepreneurs and those in motorsports. Prior to joining Mitchell Community College, I was employed for many years at a Fortune 500 company in various communication-related capacities. I am currently pursuing a master’s degree in English with an emphasis in technical and professional communication from East Carolina University. When not busy with work and school, I enjoy exercising at the gym, reading, traveling and spending time with my young son, husband and friends. I am honored to be a part of the Mitchell Community College system and look forward to a long career serving both the students and community. I have thirteen years of experience coming from community and private mental health agencies which include teaching parent education programs, child developmental testing, client rights advocacy and clinical supervision. I have lived in Iredell county all of my life. I enjoy spending time with God, my husband Richard, and my son Tyler. I have a BS in industrial technology from East Carolina University and will obtain my MS in industrial technology (with a concentration in manufacturing) this May. I worked as a system analyst/programmer for about 20 years first working for Philip Morris in Richmond, VA, & then for Gaston County Dyeing Machine Company, a family-owned textile machinery company in Mt. Holly. I was laid off in 2001 due to the problems in the textile industry but have happily found my home here at MCC. I'm married to Harry Watt, an MCC graduate & we live in north of Statesville. We're proud parents of two dogs & enjoy biking, camping and hiking & working on our property. I also enjoy knitting, swimming & playing the saxophone in the MCC Concert & Jazz Bands. I begin each day by thanking the Lord for my salvation, the new day, and my husband. I am thankful the Lord has allowed me to work here since 2002, and I appreciate the Mitchell family because you make this a great place to work! I would like to express how proud I am to be considered a member of the Mitchell Family. I moved to North Carolina from Jamaica and was in culture shock for an entire year. But the years after that have been awesome. I obtained my teaching diploma at Bethlehem Teachers’ College in Jamaica, my bachelor’s degree at Western Carolina University and my Masters at Walden University. In my spare time I enjoy watching TV, cooking Jamaican dishes, going to the movies and of course spending time with my husband Joe. It is my first week here at Mitchell Community College and everyone has made me feel so welcome. I have spent the last 20 years traveling the world with my husband (who recently retired from the United States Air Force) and we decided to call North Carolina our home. I am originally from Ohio and graduated with my BS in accounting from the University of Southern Mississippi. I love animals, enjoy singing and anything that involves being outdoors. I’m back! As the Printing Technician/Publishing Assistant, the same position I held about three years ago before moving to Maine. I loved working here then and I love it now. While in Maine, I lived with my husband on a tiny island accessible only by boat, off the coast near Bar Harbor. It was a great experience and I hope to live there again one day. We’re now back in Statesville and have a 7-month-old baby boy that keeps me busier, but brings me more joy, than I ever imagined. Although I have only recently joined Mitchell Community College, I already feel comfortable because everyone is extremely kind and helpful. Before coming to Mitchell, I taught English at a college in New Mexico. I am originally from Ohio. I earned a B.A. in English with a minor in Spanish and an M.A. in English with concentrations in composition and rhetoric and women ’s studies from Wright State University in Dayton, OH. In my spare time, I enjoy exploring North Carolina, riding my motorcycle, reading, writing, playing various sports, and spending time with Morpheus, my cat. I would like to thank everyone at MCC for being so helpful and welcoming during my first month here. I have the privilege of working for the English department as coordinator. Prior to moving to Mooresville, I lived in Asheville and was the department chair of English and communications at A-B Tech. My education is from Florida State (basic studies), Agnes Scott College (B.A. English), Emory University (M.Ed. English), and Western Carolina University (finishing up the M.A. English program). In my free time I like to boat on Lake Norman, take ballet and yoga classes, go to minor league baseball games, quilt, cook, read, and play with my cats. I am thrilled to be back at Mitchell in a permanent position as a Counselor, FINALLY. I have worked off and on in Student Services as a temp and as a graduate student intern. The past year, I worked as the Director of the Student Enrichment Center at McDowell Technical Community College in Marion. I will be marrying the best guy in the world, Cameron, this January. We currently live in Hickory with my two unruly cats, Bobbie and Fuzz. In my rare moments of spare time, I enjoy doing as little as possible. I came to Mitchell Community College in August of this year and my time here has been very exciting so far. I completed both my undergraduate and graduate studies in Spanish at NC State University. After growing up in Salisbury and spending several years in Raleigh, I now live with my husband, Kurt, in China Grove. I love to travel and spend time with our family and friends. I came to Mitchell Community College in August of 2006, shortly after moving to North Carolina. The majority of my life was spent in Florida, where I received a B.S. in mathematics from Florida State University and an M.S. in mathematics from the University of Florida. Some of my outside interests include singing, watching movies, rollerblading, bicycling, playing video games, and listening to books on CD in the car (Winston-Salem is a bit of a commute). Of course, my favorite activity is spending time with my wife, Jess, and our little Peek-a-Poo, Tank. I began work with Mitchell last September and am greatly enjoying the fast pace of work with Iredell County’s large variety of business and industry while providing educational opportunities for the work force. When I am not working, I am often doing something musical; chorus, quartet, directing two children’s choirs at church or simply enjoying listening to good music. I am also a runner, hiker, and water-color artist. I am married to Mike Scipione and we have a herd of furry children, namely two chocolate labradors and three rescued cats! This coming September, I will have been employed with Mitchell for one year as the Administrative Assistant for the Basic Skills Department. However, Mitchell has been a long time part of my life since 1986, when I first came as a student. While attending Mitchell, I have received an A.A.S. in accounting and an A.A. degree. I have two children, Marisa, age 15, and Andrew, age 12. I enjoy singing, playing the piano, and cake decorating.
I am Bruce Sowers. I have worked as a maintenance technician at Mitchell Community College for 3 years. I enjoy my work here at Mitchell. My hobbies are collecting old kerosene lamps and horseback riding. I became a part of the Mitchell Community first as a student, then as a tutor, an adjunct instructor, and now as full-time faculty. I received my B.A. in English literature from Lenoir-Rhyne College and have my master’s degree at UNCC almost completed. I was born in Pennsylvania, but moved to N.C. as a child. I have three children, Heidi (20), Stephen (19), and Suzi (17) who all are working and going to school, just like their mom! My one pet is a lovable, but not handsome, mutt named Lucky. I am an avid reader, I dabble at writing, I hike, and I am an amateur Muay Thai fighter. As a proud member of the Mitchell Community College family, I serve as the Administrative Assistant for the Nursing, Allied Health and Public Service Technologies Division. I have never been married, so I have no liabilities to report. I am from Charleston, SC, and moved to Statesville to be a caregiver for my mother and brother. My interests and hobbies are gemology and antiquing. I have a great love for animals and have a nice fat cat, Jasmine, and a puppy named Rocky. I refused to subject the Mitchell community to a current picture, so I submitted a picture of my smaller self as a reminder of my most important goal. My name is Terry Braddock. I have been working here at Mitchell for 16 years and thoroughly enjoy it. Before starting here, I worked in security for over five years in Charlotte. I am the proud grandfather of five, ages 8, 10, 13 and 2 college-age. I recently became engaged to be married to a lovely lady who was a colonel in the Air Force for many years. Being the Program Coordinator for electronics engineering technology is a great job. I teach electronics, electrical and computer engineering classes. I am orginally from this area. I previously worked for Duke Power Company for 20 years. I am a single mother of two teenagers, Kasey, 16, and David, 14. I love to watch and play all sports. Originally from Oak Ridge, Tennessee, I spent 17 years working as a librarian. After having a child with special needs, my interests and career turned to working with, and advocating for, people with developmental disabilities. I became a compensatory education instructor at Mitchell Community College five years ago and have thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of teaching. My husband, Steve, and I have two children—Kyle, 23, at ASU, and Rachel, 13. We all enjoy time on beautiful Lake Norman, hiking and gardening. I have been with MCC for 19 years. Prior to being employed here, I was a student here. I earned my High School Equivalency and my associates in Business Administration from Mitchell. I earned my B.S in business administration from Catawba College in Salisbury. My employment began in 1985 as a work-study student, where Carolyn Gray and Carolyn Morrison trained me as switchboard operator. I later became a part-time assistant instructor in the Basic Skills program and got full-time employment in 1994. I do intake, orientation, placement testing and serve as GED Examiner when needed. I serve on the board as secretary for the Family Self Sufficiency Program at Statesville Housing Authority. My time here at MCC has been very rewarding and I enjoy working with adults. My husband James and I have been married for nine years. I enjoy reading and cooking. As a child I had some wonderful teachers. When asked what I wanted to be when I grew up, my response was “a teacher.” As a teenager I worked at Davis Hospital two summers and decided to go into the nursing program at Presbyterian Hospital School of Nursing. As an RN I have enjoyed many patient education opportunities. I later completed my BSN at Gardner Webb University. I have enjoyed teaching at Mitchell and currently work as HRD-Plus Coordinator for Project HEALTH. I am the Administrative Assistant to the VP for Finance and Auxiliary Services. I have been in this position since November of 1993. I am the grandmother of 8 and great grandmother of 1 ½. I love working here at Mitchell and enjoy the fellowship of the Mitchell family. Born in Zimbabwe, Africa, I obtained a diploma in secretarial at Speciss College in Harare. My first secretarial job was at the University of Zimbabwe. The North Carolina Community College System has been an important and exciting part of my life, first as a high school student collecting dimes to help build Wilkes Community College, later as a member of the first associate degree graduating class of what is now GTCC, and finally in my current position at Mitchell. Before coming to Mitchell full-time in 1992, I operated an accounting service for small businesses and taught classes at Mitchell in Income Tax and Small Business Operations. My husband, Scott, and I are life-long residents of North Carolina, having re-located to Statesville in 1977 with his job. We have two daughters, Jennifer, who lives in Granite Falls, and Natalie, who lives in West Iredell. I enjoy sewing and reading, but spend most of my leisure time enjoying my three grandchildren: Garrett, age 5, and Claire and Kassie, age 2. This month marks my third anniversary of being at Mitchell Community College! I feel fortunate to be here and I believe that I have the best position on campus. I have the opportunity to meet students in class and through the MIND Center. I reside in Mooresville with my husband and youngest daughter, having moved here from Baton Rouge, Louisiana. I also have two sons and a second daughter who are grown and live in Raleigh, Seattle, and Dallas. My education includes two master degrees in psychology and a doctorate which is a hybrid, composed of organizational psychology, organizational development, and adult education. Mitchell is a special community and I leave home everyday telling my family “I am off to have fun.” I have been an instructor here for six years. I teach interpersonal communication, public speaking and occasionally a humanities course. I previously worked in radio, WSIC/WFMX, for about 14 years. I’m happy to be at Mitchell. I like to cook, travel, walk, read mystery novels, watch old movies, listen to music & work in my flower garden. I came to Mitchell from Dinostar Inc, an educationally based retail store and e-Commerce site. My wife Jodi and I founded Dinostar about 7 years ago and sold authentic dinosaur bones and spacecraft artifacts. While operating Dinostar, I taught marketing for CPCC. Before Dinostar, I worked in the defense, manufacturing and high-tech industries. I have been a vice-president for both a Fortune 500 and a Nasdaq 100 company. Jodi and I live in south Charlotte and dream of a shorter commute when our son Jake (15) graduates high school. Three poodles—a toy, a miniature and a standard—round out our family which orginally hails from St. Louis, Missouri. I am extremely pleased to be with the faculty, staff and students of Mitchell Community College. I am delighted to be back in my native state of North Carolina and part of the Mitchell Community College faculty. Departing from teaching after graduate school, I spent the next 20 years in the telecommunications industry and lived in Ohio and Virginia. My passion is my family—husband, Bob, who is in real estate, daughter, Parker, who is a senior at Lenoir-Rhyne College, and shih-tzu, Patch. I enjoy travel, shopping, bridge, golf, and teaching math! We live at Lake Norman, which is like being on a perpetual vacation! I'm the new Financial Aid Specialist here at MCC & a newcomer to NC. I received my bachelors degree from the U. of Maryland & plan to receive my masters from there as well in Dec. 2005. Since moving to NC, I really enjoy meeting the people & “southern hospitality” I've heard so much about. I like living in Statesville, yet having the lure of Charlotte so close presents other cultural activities that I hope to attend. I can’t wait to experience going to my 1st professional football & basketball games! I also look forward to the milder winters I've heard about & shoveling less than 24" of snow! I love to travel & hope to do some exploring of the Carolinas. I'm very happy to be a part of MCC & look forward to helping students reach their educational goals. In my off times, I enjoy writing, traveling, and visiting friends. I grew up in Eastern N.C. near the beach & enjoyed spending my summers working & surfing. While I was attending community college I decided to see more of our wonderful state, so I transferred to Gardner-Webb University. I liked this area so much that I decided to stay. I enjoy people, fishing, going to garage sales and auctions with my wife, and spending time with my grandchildren. I began working part-time at Mitchell Community College in 1992, teaching GED preparation classes. Since then, I have worked in a variety of capacities within the college, but I have been the HRD Coordinator for the past 4½ years. My work is both challenging and rewarding in that the HRD Program assists dislocated workers with acquiring re-employment skills and obtaining retraining. During my short hiatus, I was employed as a peak-time teller in the Outpost at the State Employees’ Credit Union and helped in the planning of my daughter Mary’s wedding, who was married June 12th of this year. I became part of the “Mitchell Family” at the end of August this year. I enjoy quilting, reading, travelling, camping, and taking piano lessons. I was born and raised in Indiana and graduated from Ball State University. I put myself through school working full time and truly enjoyed my college experience. Afterwards, I worked in Financial Aid for several years and am amazed at the electronic progression that has taken place during a brief absence. I am happy to be back in the college setting and even happier to have been in North Carolina for the past 16 years. My busy home in Mooresville includes my son Jay, who is in the 7th grade and daughter Emily, who is in the 1st grade. Recently I aquired a small kitty cat named Jewel. And considering that I have never owned a cat, I am happy to report she has settled in nicely. This is my first semester at MCC, Davie County High School was my previous employer, and am enjoying my time as the physics instructor. I grew up near Lenoir, NC and earned my first college degree from Caldwell Community College and Technical Institute. Afterwards I earned my bachelor’s degree from Lenoir-Rhyne College and taught high school for several years. I decided to pursue graduate school and at UNC Charlotte I received my master’s in applied physics and a Ph.D. in mechanical engineering. My research specialty is in the field of precision optical measurements. After teaching at UNC Charlotte as a post-doc for 1 year, I took a position at Digital Optics Corporation in Charlotte as a Senior Test Engineer. I have also worked summers for two Department of Energy laboratories and have published a few papers. Hobbies and interests include most sports, hiking and camping, computers and making “stuff.” I live in Mocksville with my wife, Charlene, two small children, Micah and Caleb, and various pets. Although I am a native of Statesville, after preparing myself for a professional career in the computer field, I could not find an opportunity to improve and polish my skills in Statesville, so I moved to Charlotte. There I taught for a small computer school for about 3 years. Afterwards, I was employed by Microsoft as a Certified Visual FoxPro Database Programming Support Engineer. This employment also lasted for about 3 years. While working for Microsoft, I was hired by MCC as a part-time computer instructor. This lasted for 5 years when a full-time position became available to me, and I accepted. Presently, I am into my 6th year at MCC and I still find teaching challenging and also very rewarding. The small contributions that I make to help people find out that they have choices in their lives that can make their living conditions improve and affect the people around them in a positive way, motivates me to get up and come to work every day. I have been with Mitchell Community College since August of 1997. I began as a curriculum student and a work-study student in the Financial Services Department. Since then I have held positions of part- time Office Assistant, Cashier, and Accounting Clerk. I have taken numerous classes on the main campus and at the Continuing Education Center and have received a lot of valuable knowledge. I am currently working toward an office systems technology degree and plan to graduate in May. It is a joy to work at Mitchell and be a part of the MCC family. I have a husband, Mike, and a stepson Coty, and we enjoy walking and bicycling. I was born and raised in the beautiful Northwestern state of Oregon, and moved to Montréal, Québec, Canada after meeting my lovely wife Amélie Schinck (math instructor at Mitchell). I was employed as a Computer Systems Analyst for 4 years in Montréal before relocating to Statesville where I have lived for nearly 3 years. I am a Microsoft Certified Professional, and a certified computer and network technician. I earned an A.A.S. in Information Systems from Mitchell Community College, and I am presently working towards a B.S. in Computer Science. I enjoy working at Mitchell and being involved in academic life. I have experienced Mitchell as an employee and as a student. I graduated with my A.A.S. in Criminal Justice here in May. I thoroughly enjoy all the interaction with faculty, staff, and students. I moved to this area in June of 1990 from Clintwood, Virginia, leaving behind my entire family. Since then I am happy to report , both my brothers, my niece, nephew, and my Mom reside in Mooresville. I was employed by Draymore Mfg. until the summer of 1998, when the company went out of business. I enrolled at Mitchell at that point, and I am beginning my fourth year here in Security. I am blessed with two wonderful girls, Melanie and Decota, three adorable grandchildren, Noah, Alecsai, and Brock Allen, my son-in-law Paul, and my fiance, Wayne Bailey. I am a 1992 graduate of Lenoir-Rhyne College. Over the years, I have had several disability related positions. Most notably, I was the Disabilities Coordinator at L-RC from 1999 to 2003. While employed at Lenoir-Rhyne, I completed my masters degree in counseling. This spring I passed the National Counselor Exam and should receive my N.C. Licensed Professional Counselor credential in early 2005. I am very happy to be at MCC. Everyone I have met has been very friendly and I felt at home here right away. I was born and raised in Charlotte, N.C., and joined Mitchell Community College on June 3, 2004. I am honored to have become a part of the MCC family and community. I moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, in 1995, where I received an associate degree from Harrisburg Area Community College (HACC) bachelors and masters degrees from Penn State University. I returned to North Carolina after being employed at HACC as an Admissions Specialist in the Student Services Division. After 9 ½ years, I am very happy to have returned to my home state to family and friends. I treasure the time that I get to spend with them (even though they continue to hold me responsible for the “wintry” weather I brought from Pennsylvania). I really missed the early springs, long summers, mild winters and “southern hospitality” (especially the food). For me, there truly is…”no place like home.” When I was 12, my family relocated to the mountains of North Carolina from Minnesota & I have loved NC from day one. My husband’s employment took us to Virginia for about 15 years, but we moved back “home” in October 2001. My husband Randall works for Carvel Ice Cream & travels quite a bit in NC, VA & SC. Our son Aaron, a graduate of Virginia Tech, is a computer engineer working in the DC area & is married to Hannah (also a Virginia Tech grad). Our daughter Elizabeth is a senior at UNC-Charlotte, majoring in English & education (and is contemplating law school). We have a new puppy, Petunia (Tunie for short), who is already queen of the house in a span of only four weeks. I have worked in many aspects of education—a private four-year college, a public school system, & in the community college system & have enjoyed being involved in such an important aspect of everyday life. MCC is a wonderful place to work and I’m enjoying getting to know and enjoy working with everyone here. I came to Mitchell Community College about four years ago from Iredell County DSS where I worked with their Adult Medicaid Unit. I started in Continuing Education and am now in Institutional Effectiveness and Quality Assurance. My husband Larry and I live in Mooresville and we have one son who is a senior at NC State. He is a pilot and takes us on short trips when he comes home and has the time. My husband Larry is the IT Manager for a company in Charlotte. We love to travel and camping, hiking, and skiing take up much of our time. I enjoy working with the “family” at Mitchell Community College and I certainly wish success for all our faculty, staff and students. As a graduate of Mitchell College, before it became a community college, Mitchell was a stepping stone for me in achieving my educational goals. I received my bachelor of arts degree from Mars Hill College & my master of library science degree from ASU. I've had the privilege of working at MCC for 25 yrs. & have been the Librarian since 1987. Many changes have taken place during these 25 yrs. but the one thing that has remained constant is the commitment of faculty and staff in providing quality education and services to the students at MCC. It is an honor & privilege to work with so many talented, caring, and committed individuals who give of themselves so willingly to encourage students to meet their individual & collective goals. My wonderful husband, Bill, is a design engineer & we stay busy being caregivers to my dad & my grandmother, both of whom live with us. My grandmother will turn 99 on July 1 so we are planning a big celebration in her honor. I enjoy reading, crafts and spending time with Bill. My name is Bill Moose. I have been at MCC since the fall of 1981 as an instructor in history and political science. I am a native and lifelong resident of Iredell County. I was educated at Ebenezer Elementary School, Harmony High School, Mitchell College (pre-community college status) and Wake Foreset University. My wife, Ena, is a counselor in the Iredell-Statesville School System. We have two children. Katie is a junior in high school and David is a seventh grader. Katie is our artist and David is our athlete. As most of you probably know, I have been working on the College history for the last several years. My part in that project is almost complete. Hopefully, it will be in print within the next year. I graduated from Eastern Illinois University with a B.S. in home economics. I majored in foods and nutrition and minored in business. I worked for many years in a university food service setting before going over to “the other side.” After all these years, I’m still wondering what possessed me to choose home economics for a major, since I avoid cooking at all possible costs! I’ve worked at Mitchell for about two and a half years now. As many of you know, my husband Mike teaches developmental English. Meghan, our daughter, is at Penn University working on her masters degree in art. And our son, Ryan, is a senior at Western Carolina majoring in criminal justice. The rest of the family consists of Maggie, the Springer Spaniel, and Chuck, Jo-Bu and Faux Paw, the cats. Having grown up in the flatlands of Illinois, where the view consists of mile after mile of rows of corn, we love the diversity and beauty of the North Carolina countryside. We both enjoy working with the folks at Mitchell. I was program head of cosmetology at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College for 6 years & taught there for 8 years. I moved to Myrtle Beach for a year & worked in a day spa. I returned to NC & came to work for MCC as a p-t faculty member. I’m now enjoying my new position as Coordinator of Cosmetology. I have a NC cosmetologist license & a NC cosmetologist instructor’s license. I have 18 years of experience as coordinator for other schools & 19 years teaching experience. I'm currently working on my associate degree in cosmetology. I was secretary/treasurer for the NC Community College Cosmetology Association from 2000-2002 & have owned my own salon. I have 3 grown children—2 boys & a girl & have 2 grandchildren—a boy & a girl. I enjoy working for MCC & helping to make the program & students the very best it can be is my goals. The people at MCC are friendly & helpful. It is a pleasure to see familiar faces getting services at the Cosmetic Arts Center.Thank you all for your support during my first months at MCC. Mitchell has been my second home since spring quarter of 1995 when I enrolled on the Main Campus as a displaced worker. I began working at the Continuing Education Center in February 1996 part-time as the afternoon receptionist. After many courses and some wonderful instructors, I graduated in June 1997 with high honors and an AAS in administrative office technology and an accounting certificate. On June 1, 1998, I began my full-time employment with Mitchell as the Occupational Extension Secretary & Data Specialist. The job title has changed a little; however, the mission remains the same: helping students, instructors, and co-workers. My husband of nine years and counting, Allen, and I recently moved closer to Statesville. We have a spoiled Basset Hound/Beagle mix named Cookie who thinks she’s human. I enjoy cooking and am looking forward to trying my hand at gardening/landscaping. | |
