On Thursday, Mitchell Community College employees and students as well as many community members celebrated the life of Martin Luther King Jr. and the recipients of the Viola Kimbrough Parker Diversity award. Judge Denise Hartsfield of Winston-Salem was the guest speaker. She encouraged Statesville and Iredell County to continue to make strides in combating racism in all its forms. She reminded the gathering of King’s fight. "His battle was not a black thing, a Christian thing, a man thing or a woman thing. It was a human thing," she said. The Viola Kimbrough Parker Diversity Awards were presented to Gary Johnson, MCC student Kimberly Grady and, posthumously, to community activist Pat Reichart. Johnson said he was truly pleased to receive the award. "I knew Viola so it’s a very personal thing for me. She was a special friend of mine," he said. "I am honored that the people with whom I work thought enough of me to nominate for this award." Grady, a second-year business administration, marketing and retailing major, said the moment was touching. "I am speechless," she said. Reichart’s daughter Dorie Shore and other family members accepted the award on their mother’s behalf. "She would have been touched," Shore said. "She was such a behind-the-scenes person. She never wanted any special recognition for her work. She just loved doing it, but she would have been honored to receive this award." —Submitted by Kara Presnell (01.18.06)
