Motivating Students Series
Tell students what they need to do to succeed in your course. Don’t wait for them to figure it out on their own —they may not. Reassure students that they can do well and point out key problems, concepts, and information blocks that they need to be able to solve, understand, and/or explain to be successful. Offer extra help, resources, and strategies to help them grasp the material. Avoid messages that reinforce your power as an instructor or emphasize extrinsic reward. Instead of saying, "I require," "your must," or "you should," stress "I think you will find..." or "I will be interested in your assessment of..." —Submitted by Employee Development (10.01.08)

  • The child care work force is 581 (2005 figures).
  • There are 11,918 children aged birth to five-years-old in Iredell County (2005 figures).
  • Every education (EDU) course has a four hour field experience and a blackboard assignment component to promote the conceptual framework of technology and children/family relationships.
  • The early childhood programs offered are the Teacher Associate, Early Childhood, Special Education AAS degrees, an Infant Toddler Certificate, Early Childhood Certificate, Lateral Entry Certificate and Parent Educator Certificate.
  • The Iredell County Partnership for Young Children reported that 409 out of 581 child care providers in Iredell County completed a formal professional development plan. 134 out of the 409 child care providers who completed their Professional Development Plan enrolled in at least one course for the academic year 2006-2007, which is 33%.
  • Through the Iredell County Partnership for Young Children, 135 child care providers received Smart Start Education awards totaling $70,300 in 2006-2007 and 144 child care providers received Smart Start Wages salary supplement for $115,945.
  • MCC Early Childhood faculty are Jamie Brown (704.978.5477, CSC-206), Dede Dunst (704.838.1547, CSC-213) and Helen Watkins (704.978.5416, MVL-088).
