Basic Skills in the Workplace

This program is designed to meet the needs of the employer and the employee in the performance of their work. Employees receive instruction in such areas as reading, computation, problem solving, communication skills and team-working skills. Workplace vocabulary, safety procedures, workplace forms, recording time cards and various computer-assisted instructions using workplace software may be incorporated in the curricula.

Whether you’re 18 or 80, the Basic Skills Program can provide you with opportunities to improve your work skills, increase your self-esteem, set goals, learn decision making, compete for better jobs, adjust to life in the U.S., or even volunteer as a tutor. A variety of classes are held at night and during the day in both Statesville and Mooresville, plus many classes are held in the community and at local industries.

GED – General Education Development

For those age 18 or older who have not received a high school diploma.

ESL – English as a Second Language

Designed for non-native speakers, learn reading, writing, conversation, Basic adjustment skills. Classes range from beginning to advance. All New Interactive ESL Computer Lab.

ABE- Adult Basic Education

For adults age 18 or older. Improve your reading, writing, math, money management, problem solving, and survival skills.

Compensatory Education

Especially designed for mentally handicapped adults age 18 and older. Areas of study include vocational education, language, math, health, community living, problem solving strategies, and a leisure component.

The Learning Center

The learning center is a uniquely styled lab with state-of-the-art methods in teaching adults reading, writing, and math skills. Adults can pursue their own goals whether they are working toward a GED, learning English as a Second Language, or simply improving their basic skills (ABE). Staffed with six instructors and numerous volunteer tutors, students have an opportunity to attend class as their schedules permit. In addition, students are free to choose the type of instruction they prefer whether it be one-on-one, group, or computer assisted instruction. Classes are scheduled in both Statesville and Mooresville. For more information, call 704.878.3233.

Project Lead Lab

Self-paced computer-based instruction. For those who desire to become more productive in today’s workforce. Basic and advanced reading, math, personal management skills and more.

HRD – Human Resource Development

Designed to enhance employability skills. Features resume’ writing, completing a job application, job interview skills, college preparation, study skills and numerous computer skills. Helps to develop strong positive self-image.
