General Educational Development Online

I want to welcome you! My name is Peggy Campbell and I am the program coordinator for Mitchell Community College’s GED Online. This site hopefully will answer your questions concerning the GED online program.

Can I do everything online?

Orientation and Registration is the initial session with our program. This is not online. This will be at one of our sites.Once you have identified that you would like to take GED online, an initial session with me, the program coordinator will take place at Statesville Continuing Education Center on 701 West Front Street, Statesville. Here you will be provided with the tools to make your online sessions a success. Your work after that will be online. Once you feel ready to take the official GED Tests we will make an appointment to register you for the test.

Orientation and Testing Places:

Continuing Education Statesville Location – Monday at 9:00am or 5:30pm Call 704-878-3232 for more details

Mooresville Extension Center -Tuesday at 9:00am or 5:00pm Call 704.663.5418 for more details

How to become an Online GED student:

  • Attend an Orientation and Registration Session

  • Score at or near GED level in Reading

  • Be 18 years old and have a N.C. photo identification card.

  • If you are not 18, we accept 16 year olds and up who have a release form (obtained from Mitchell Community College) that is signed and notarized with guardian signature and principal of last school attended signature, a N. C photo I. D. and have been formally withdrawn from school for at least 6 months.

  • Acess to a Windows based computer (at least running Win 98) that you have the ability to download software on. The public library WILL NOT work! They will not let you download or add software on their computers.

  • You must have a stable Internet connection

  • You must have an e-mail address that is current and accessed reqularly.

  • Take the software at our intial session and install it on your Windows based computer

Online Requirements:

  • Work at least two hours or more a week toward your goal of obtaining a GED

  • When you finished with the subject’s units, you will take the online practice tests and score 470 or better in the “timed” mode. If not timed I will not accept this test.

  • Fill out the appropriate paperwork

  • Take the official GED TEST( you may take one test at a time or, as many as the schedule allows)

Books:

You do not have to buy a book. However, there are excellent books by Contemporary, Seck-Vaughn, and others. I normally suggest working online for awhile and then decide if you will need a book. We can talk online about it if you are having problems.
