This annual award honors an alumnus who has achieved exceptional career goals, or earned a superior reputation within a particular field, or made significant contributions to the College, or to the local or national community. Alumnus is defined as a person who has obtained a degree, certificate or diploma from the College, or its immediate predecessor, Mitchell College.

2012 - Bill Moose, Class of 1968
Mitchell alumnus and retired instructor William "Bill" Moose was named this year’s Mitchell Distinguished Alumni award winner. The announcement was made during the annual alumni reunion luncheon. Moose was recognized again at the College’s opening faculty/staff assembly.
Moose grew up in Iredell County and completed his first two years of college at Mitchell before transferring to Wake Forest University, where he completed a B.A. and M.A. in history. While a student at Mitchell, Moose served as vice president of Phi Theta Kappa and as a member of the Mu Chapter of Sigma Pi Alpha. He was selected to the 1968 edition of Who's Who Among Students in American Junior Colleges.
In 1981, Moose began teaching U.S. and N.C. history at Mitchell. He retired in 2011 with 30 years of service. During his tenure, students, faculty, and staff often sought him out for his expertise about local, state, and national history. For many years, Moose researched and wrote a weekly column, "Out of Our Past in Iredell," in the Statesville Record and Landmark.
Moose credits Oscar Stradley, an instructor at Mitchell from 1963-1993, for helping to ignite his passion for history. His ongoing scholarship about the history of the College resulted in the publication of "A History of Mitchell Community College" published in 2005. He and his wife, Ena, have two children, Katie and David.
